D/MAX RAPID II is arguably the most versatile micro-diffraction XRD system in the history of materials analysis. In production for well over a decade and continuously improved during that time period, the success of the D/MAX RAPID II is a testament to the suitability of imaging plate technology for measuring diffraction patterns and diffuse scattering from a wide range of materials. Imaging plates are efficient because many F-centers are produced from each X-ray photon. The output signal is proportional to the incident X-ray dose over many orders of magnitude, so this type of detector has a very linear, wide dynamic range. Pixels are independent so there is no problem with measuring high intensity events in the presence of weak events.

Engineered for Versatility

The most important aspect of a microdiffraction experiment is the X-ray source. A good microdiffraction X-ray beam needs to have low divergence and, at the same time, high brilliance. Rigaku offers four X-ray source choices. Rigaku’s MicroMax™-007 HFM X-ray generator coupled with VariMax™ CMF multilayer optics uniquely defines the most advanced and usable X-ray source for microdiffraction. The MicroMax-007 is also available as a dual wavelength source, where the anode has two target materials and a specially designed optic that allows you to easily switch between two wavelengths. This source is perfect for people who want to use Cr radiation for measuring Fe-based materials and switch to Cu radiation for standard powder work. The MicroMax-003 sealed tube source is popular for its high brilliance and low maintenance. Finally, Rigaku offers a low-cost version, the D/MAX RAPID II-S, that utilizes a 3 kW X-ray source as a more economical, albeit, less powerful solution.

Unique imaging plate (IP) detector

The X-ray detector is also an essential component of a microdiffraction instrument. Rigaku’s D/MAX RAPID II diffractometer, utilizes a large imaging plate storage phosphor detector that maximizes simultaneous diffraction accumulation and minimizes measurement time. When an X-ray photon hits the phosphor, ionized electrons are trapped in metastable states, or F-centers. Exposure to visible light excites traps and leads to the release of light. In the RAPID II, the sample is irradiated with X-rays, and the diffraction or scattering pattern is recorded on the storage phosphor and then read out with a raster scanner.

Experiments run on the D/MAX RAPID II are limited only by the imagination of the researcher. Examples include, phase ID of powder samples, micro-diffraction mapping down to 10 microns, diffuse scattering, fiber diffraction, small molecule structure analysis, stress and texture measurements, etc.
