Polymers and fibers

Many plastic polymers and fibers have some order and can be identified and studied by X-ray diffraction methods. These polymers are, at least in part, crystalline or pseudo-crystalline with partially ordered structures which cause diffraction peaks.


In the study of different polycrystalline structures, within a drug compound, one polymorph is distinguished from another by a unique powder diffraction pattern associated with that specific crystal structure.

Pore size distribution

While a variety of techniques are employed to analyze pore related properties, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and related methods like small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) have the advantage of being non-destructive. SAXS is capable of pore size determination with pore diameters below ten angstroms.

Texture and pole figures

In materials science, texture is the distribution of crystallographic orientations of a sample. A sample in which these orientations are random is said to have a random texture. If the crystallographic orientations are not random, but have some preferred direction, then the sample has a weak, strong, or moderate texture.

X-ray diffraction is especially valuable to the study of epitaxial layers and other thin film materials. Using precision lattice parameter measurement methods, the lattice mis-match of an epitaxial layer and its substrate can be determined with great precision.
